Statement from the Association for the Study of African American
Life and History in
Support of the People of Haiti
Founders of Black History Month
The membership of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) stands squarely
behind the people of Haiti in efforts to recover from the recent massive earthquake and its aftermath. Haiti
occupies a unique role in the complex and evolving history of people of African descent in the Western
Hemisphere. Haiti also features prominently in the research conducted by the scholars and activists affiliated with
ASALH. ASALH urges all parties committed to the recovery and reconstruction of Haiti to approach these critical
tasks with a clear understanding of both the historical and contemporary forces that have created the vulnerability
of the Haitian people and exacerbated by the recent earthquake.

ASALH stands ready to assist governmental and non-governmental organizations in designing educational
programs and interventions that will contribute to the long-term stability and advancement of Haitian society. Our
members and supporters are encouraged to donate generously to those organizations working on the ground
with demonstrated capability of assisting the Haitian people in this time of urgent need.
