Director
IUPUI Arts and Humanities Institute
Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis

Applications are sought for the inaugural Director of the
IUPUI Arts and Humanities Institute (IAHI) at Indiana
University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). The
Director will be a recognized leader in arts and
humanities.  The successful candidate, working closely
with the IUPUI Arts and Humanities Council, will lead
the Institute in the realization of its mission.  He/she,
while maintaining an appointment in an academic
discipline, is expected to spend the majority of time in
carrying out the directorship responsibilities. This
includes receiving sufficient release time from teaching
duties.  The director will coordinate, strengthen, and
grow the campus arts and humanities efforts, and lead
the development of major grant proposals. He/she will
interface with the partnering campus units, will develop
and grow internal and external partnerships, and will
promote the IUPUI arts and humanities efforts
regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The new institute will support campus-wide attainment
of excellence in research and creative activity in arts
and humanities and serve as a liaison between IUPUI
and the community in the development and
advancement of arts and humanities endeavors. Over
the past four decades, while IUPUI has established
itself as the health and life sciences campus of Indiana
University, the arts and humanities have flourished at
IUPUI, garnering a position of leadership in Indianapolis
and the region. In response to this growing area of
interest, two years ago the IUPUI Arts and Humanities
Council was created to administer an internal grant
program supporting faculty research and creative work.
These grants have enabled faculty to be more
successful in competing for external funding and in
establishing interdisciplinary partnerships in the arts and
humanities.  The Council’s efforts, coupled with
support from partnering campus units, have led to the
creation of the IUPUI Arts and Humanities Institute.
The Council will oversee the overall mission and vision of
the Institute.

The mission of IAHI is to support individual faculty,
groups, and interdisciplinary teams in their pursuit of
research and creative activity in arts and humanities,
including interdisciplinary initiatives; serve as a portal for
the promotion of innovative inquiry-based arts and
humanities educational experiences in academic
curricula across campus; and act as a liaison between
IUPUI and the community in the development of arts
and humanities endeavors.

Required qualifications consist of a Ph.D. or terminal
degree in an academic discipline related to the arts or
humanities, and experience with directing significant
research and creative activity in arts and humanities. At
least five years of supervisory, program leadership,
and/or academic administrative experience in a related
or relevant position are expected, as are experience in
working closely with multidisciplinary groups, and
appreciation and advocacy for diversity, inclusion, and
equal access to educational opportunity. The successful
candidate will have a strong research and creative
activity record, including in the development of
significant grant proposals and success in securing
external research funding.

Candidates must submit an electronic application
consisting of a letter of application stating their interest
and experience, curriculum vitae, and names and
contact information of three references. This must be
submitted electronically to the Chair, IUPUI Arts and
Humanities Institute Director Search Committee, to
ovcr@iupui.edu.

Review of applications will begin November 14, 2011
and continue until the position is filled.  The starting
date for the successful candidate is negotiable.  IUPUI
is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer,
M/F/D.
