ASALH President 1936-1951
Mary McLeod Bethune, President of ASALH from 1936 through
1951, was the sculptor of the Black History Bulletin as we know
it. She charged the Association of the Study of Negro Life and
History to produce a periodical that served the needs of
teachers. Carter G. Woodson had always thought of teachers
as the vital link to teaching black youth and all youth about the
importance of Black History. In 1937, the Negro History
Bulletin, now the Black History Bulletin, was born.
Over the years, the Black History Bulletin lost sight of its
original mission, becoming various things during different
historical eras.
Indeed, a history could be written about how our nearly
70-year-old publication changed during different periods. The
most recent change is one of restoration. The BHB is returning
to its original mission, and its content is being updated to meet
the needs of teachers in primary and secondary education.
Today's teachers face the challenge not only of teaching black
history, but doing so in a manner that meets the demands of
national history teaching standards.
Taking advantage of its expertise, ASALH will provide teachers
with materials that meet and exceed the demands placed on
those entrusted with the minds of our youth.
You can help us reach the thousands of students in this and
other countries that are ignorant of their own heritage. As
Carter G. Woodson once said, "Those who have no record of
what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration
which comes from the teaching of biography and history." Let
us not lose our inspiration. Please consider donating to the
Black History Bulletin today and help our youth overcome
centuries of mis-education.
