| ASALH Kiamsha Poetry Slam |
Come join ASALH and Kiamsha and try out your slam poetry skills at a fun and friendly
event. The poetry slam is part of Kiamsha's Youth Day event, which seeks to teach
high school students about Black History.
The poetry slam will be held on Friday, October 3rd, from 10:00pm until 12:30am at
the Birmingham Sheraton Ballroom.
A poetry slam is a spoken word contest between two or more individuals. The crowd
judges the event, usually by applause. The crowd favorite is the winner.
The rules for slam poetry are widely variable, but there are some basic guidelines:
There is usually a bracket-style advancement process, much like in NCAA basketball,
where the winners move on to face other winners until there are only two left. The final
round will determine the 2008 ASALH Poetry Slam Champion.

- There is a set amount of time that each participant gets to read his/her poem.
- Either the crowd or a pre-determined, impartial panel of judges will decide the
winner.
